Yes, we know, 2018 was the longest and most tiresome year on record. But wait! The Squeaky Curd (and our fabulous unpaid writing staff) churned out some quality articles this year, as evidenced by your continued (and growing) support of what we do. Don’t believe us? Well, you’re reading this right now…

2018 saw our humble little Milwaukee website snag eyeballs in 99 different countries, with the #2 country outside of the USA being Peru! 12.5% of our readers were from Chicago, and 1.55% from New York City (more than from West Allis). All of the top 10 devices used to read us were either iPhones or Samsung Galaxies, even though every photo on the site was shot using a Google Pixel.

Our readership per article went up by over 18% year-over-year, even with a lower article count of 159 vs 230: so while you got less articles overall, you read the ones you got that much more. Here are the ones from 2018 that you the readers clicked through to the most:

Most-Read Articles from 2018

  1. Initial Thoughts on Beer Prices at Fiserv Forum
    • The cheapest beer prices at the new Fiserv Forum start at $10. That’s outrageous. And our own expose all started with a visit to their Open House, followed by a call-out (slash lie) direct from the Fiserv Forum Twitter account.
  2. GWBT #142: New Glarus Brewing Company
    • Our GWBT articles don’t often get such readership, but your love for Spotted Cow sent this recap straight to the top. My extraordinarily high expectations going into our New Glarus visit were matched and exceeded.
  3. Milwaukee Beer Gardens: Kids Encouraged
    • As Katie and I get ready to pop out our own little cheese curd baby, it’s nice to know the rest of our readers also appreciate the finer points of how to drink beer in parks.
  4. The Couture: Currently More Pit Than Picturesque
    • It seems like every other week there’s a new article about how The Couture high rise has passed another building hurdle. Well, here we are almost a year after I wrote this article, and the un-touched pit still remains.
  5. In Search of Walker’s Literal Point
    • Something I’ve been meaning to write since the inception of TSC, the story behind where Walker’s Point got its name and how it relates to today’s Milwaukee has always fascinated me, and apparently all of you as well.

Joe’s Personal Top Picks for 2018

  1. Tory Hill: The Neighborhood Milwaukee Paved Over
    • Boo Marquette! Bring back Tory Hill!
  2. What Lies Below Summerfest: Airplanes, Dead Elephants, and Anti-Aircraft Missiles
    • How did such a click-bait yet crazily-accurate headline not attract more readers?
  3. A Season Ending Monday Sunday Cycle
    • Rob Petrie pulled out all stops to end a historic Brewers season by interviewing himself.
  4. Milwaukee Commuter Rail: On Track or Out Of Steam?
    • Connecting Milwaukee’s past to its future, via rail.
  5. A Farewell Ode to Jabari Parker
    • I also write sonnets for those interested.

We here at The Squeaky Curd are so grateful for the continued support of our readers. Thanks to your interest in what we have to see, do, and write, our crew as able to snag media passes to Summerfest, meet multiple local celebrities, visit tons of cool hidden spots around town, and best of all talk with plenty of you local Milwaukeeans.

Thank you for reading and joining our celebration of all Milwaukee has to offer. Cheers to continued success (and an additional team member) in 2019!

As our social outreach budget is currently $0, we’d love for you to continue sharing and talking up our articles that you find worthwhile on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. And don’t forget to subscribe via email!
